Mourners were Miss N. Besly (sister); Mr J. Besly (brother); Mr A.J. Tweedie (brother in law); Miss Edwards (niece). (A list of other mourners follows.)

NORTH DEVON JOURNAL - 29 Aug 1912: "Death of Miss Besly. We regret to record the death early yesterday morning, at the ripe old age of 81 years, of Miss E. O. Besly of Braunton. Miss Besly, who died at the residence of her nieces, the Misses Besly, North St, was connected with the leading old Braunton families, many of her relatives being still residents in the neighbourhood. The deceased lady, who was greatly respected, had been ill for a long time up to the time of her death. Great sympathy will be felt with the relatives.

NORTH DEVON JOURNAL "12.3.1908 8F Braunton Death - It is with regret that we have to record the death of an old and much respected resident of Braunton in the person of Mrs Fanny Besly. Mrs Besly was the widow of the late Mr Henry Besly of Brentford, and had resided in Braunton for a number of years. The deceased evinced a sympathetic interest in all local affairs. Mrs Besly passed away at her residence in North Street, Braunton, on Saturday, the funeral taking place on Tuesday. The interment was made in St Brannock’s Burial Ground, amid signs of general regret. The Rev. E.R. Gotto officiated, and a large number assembled as a tribute of respect. The mourners were, Misses Edith and Norah Besly (daughters); Mr and Mrs J.C. Besley (son and daughter in law), Madeira; Mrs Rutland (niece from Hertford); and Master Dennis Besly (nephew). Dr W. Harper was also present. The coffin was of polished oak with heavy brass fittings, and was carried from the house to the churchyard. The breastplate bore the inscription :- “Fanny Besly aged 69.”

NORTH DEVON JOURNAL 20.7.1939 5F Braunton Death - The death has taken place of Mrs Kate Marion Tweedie, wife of Mr A.J. Tweedie, of “Brittons”. Mrs Tweedie, who was formerly Miss Besley of Braunton. Members of her family have been associated with Braunton for a great number of years and have played a considerable part in the development of the Empire.

NORTH DEVON JOURNAL 27.7.1939 5F Braunton Funeral - The funeral took place at St. Brannock’s Church on Saturday of Mrs Tweedie. At deceased's request there was no mourning or flowers at the funeral. Mourners were the widower; Col. and Mrs Wilson (son and daughter in law); Peter Wilson (grandson); Arthur Besley and the Misses Besley (brother and sisters). Died aged 80 yrs.

The will with two codicils of Catherine Besly late of Barnstaple in the county of Devon, spinster, who died 21 November 1872 at Barnstaple was proved at Exeter by the Rev. William Jollyman of Barnstaple, non conformist minister and William Weeks Gregory of Barnstaple, Gentleman, the Executors.

JOHN BESLY 1753: Was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy.

Wife SARAH NORWOOD abt 1750: 1841 - 90 years, independent, dwelling Brutport St., Barnstaple with three daughters - Elizabeth, Mary and Catherine. ESTATE DUTY WILLS - FILE- ref. 1078/IRW/B/769 - date: 1844 Sarah Besley of Barnstaple, Devon.

JOHN BESLY 1789: Joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman.He was on the frigate "Blanche" in the East Indies in 1810 and decided he would rather join the East India Company Army. He sent back to England to get his father to get the appropriate application forms and submit them to the East India Company office in London. Copies of some of this documentation which is at the British Library-- L/MIL/9/122 folio 61-66.

His parents had difficulty finding his baptism record and had to swear an affidavit that Sarah was his mother and it was accepted and he became an ensign in the Madras army on 23rd Feb 1811 and a lieutenant on 29th Dec 1813.

John Besley was court martialled (L/MIL 17/3/413) for taking bribes and found guilty 3rd Sept 1823. He was ordered to be embarked back to England on either the Princess Charlotte of Wales or the Thomas Grenville both ships arriving in Madras late Nov 1823 and returning to England. A delicious irony is that the captain (and indeed part owner of the Princess Charlotte ) was Charles Besley Gribble -- a relative and a highly thought of captain who met Napolean in 1816 in St Helena. It is possible and even likely that Chales Besley Gribble had vouched for him a decade earlier! John Besley's wife and the 2 children surviving at that time , were left in India and both wife and daughter died in India, the only consolation is that both were born and bred in India so were at home there. Their daughter's descendants continued in India culminating in a male being born in 1920 and returning to the UK as a baby. Information sourced by Bruce Davies.
