SHERBORNE MERCURY 25 Feb 1843 - In the case of Charles Besley, of Devonport, an insolvent, who came up to ask for the final order. Mr George William Turner, on his behalf, stated that his quarter's salary will fall due on the 3rd of March, that he has a wife and 8 children, that he has no furniture, and is without the means to provide and what he had had been swept away by an adverse creditor. He, therefore, prayed that the first installment under the order of the court, in liquidation of his debts may not be taken out of the quarters salary falling due in Marchbut out of the quarter's salary due in June next. Mr. Peter Courtney Clarke, Manager of the Devon and Cornwall Bank, who is appointed assignee, did not object to this arrangement. On which the Court granted the prayer of the Insolvent.

Mr. Besley has been above 50 years as clerk in the dockyard.

Gruesome death - shut herself away in house for two years, eating very little food - found dead, starved and naked with vermon climbing over her.

JOHN BESLEY abt 1808: 1832 - marriage, he a bachelor of Milverton - both signed.  1851 - 44 yrs farmer of 28 acres dwelling "Hellings's" Milverton emloying 1, with wife, 2 children (Frances and Henry), and an 8 yr old scholar - Mary Burston. 1861 - 54 yrs, house proprietor, dwelling in same building as mother-in-law, Kezia Butter, along with 2 sons, Robert and Henry.
Died aged 69 yrs. Gasking St, Plymouth.

In 1844 The Railway Regulation Act set the 3rd class passenger fares at 1 penny a mile and stated that passengers should be able travel in covered coaches on at least one train a day in each direction.
